Behind Me

A song I wrote about the recovery process:

For years your memory followed me,
Like a shadow, always reminding,
Me of why I’ll never be free,
Of your haunting memory.

I used to think that if I hide,
In the dark, in the night,
I wouldn’t notice you by my side.
You’d blend in, out of sight.

But now I know better,
I know that whether,
Or not I like it, you’ll always be here.
But I can make the best of it.

If I walk in the sun,
If I laugh and I run,
It’s easy to leave you behind me.
If I shine my own light,
I can erase you from my sight.
And you’ll always be behind me.

It gets easier as time goes on,
To remember that you are gone,
To remind myself that life goes on,
And that my will is a pawn.

If I walk in the sun,
If I laugh and I run,
It’s easy to leave you behind me.
If I shine my own light,
I can erase you from my sight.
And you’ll always be behind me.
